A Rich New England History
One of your hosts, Rick Davis, is a descendant of John Thompson who was deeded a 1028 acre land grant in 1771 for “settling and cultivating the land”. At one time it had been a dairy farm now the fields are still hayed providing feed for our resident horses used at our year-round stables & equestrian center.

Enjoy the Rural New Hampshire History of Seven Generations on the land – a 1771 King George III of England
B and B with an Authentic Rural New Hampshire History in North Conway: Rick can remember stories about his great-grandfather, Charlie Thompson, (1863-1947) who made a livelihood from the farm. He cared for a small herd of dairy cows; had an apple orchard, and grew vegetables. There are two barns built in 1771-72, one is an English barn (unique to the area) and the other a Yankee barn.
From his wooded acreage, he cut and sold wood, and made syrup from his “Maple Sugar Orchard”. Also prior to electricity, Charlie supplied the neighbors with large blocks of ice for their “ice boxes” that he cut by hand from nearby Echo Lake, which is 1/2 mile and great for swimming.
A view of the barns (English & Yankee barns ) C. 1771 and the Moat Mountain range from lower fields at the Farm by the River. The inn guests as well as the public can enjoy 70 acres, 11 of which is of Maple Sugar forest along the Saco River while taking a horse ride.
The tradition continues…Charlie passed away in 1947, leaving the estate to his only daughter Edith Thompson-James. In the early 1950s Edith opened the big three-story farmhouse to tourists until about 1980. Many of the guests came back year after year, and asked for the same room each time and often stayed a month or two at a time! Today the renovated B&B has guest rooms that are identified by the names of the former guests. They have kept the historic quality modern yet have modern amenities.
In 1983, Edith’s grandson, Rick inherited the family estate. Rick and his wife Charlene, a landscape architect and artist, decided to continue the tradition and re-opened “The Farm” as a Bed and Breakfast with Stables”. Instead of cows, they now 18 have horses! The stable are open to the public as well as inn guests.
Today, The Farm By the River Bed and Breakfast with Stables an award -winning inn for historic preservation with award-winning stables, is a blend of tradition and luxury, offering an elegant yet relaxed setting with lots of country charm. It is decorated with an old-fashioned decor of antique heirlooms, and hardwood floors with oriental rugs yet offers some deluxe rooms. Alpine Moose Cottage is our latest addition.
