A Rich New England History-One of your hosts, Rick Davis, is a descendant of John Thompson who was deeded a 1028 acre land grant in 1771 for “settling and cultivating the land”.  At one time it had been a dairy farm now the fields are still hayed providing feed for our resident horses used at our year-round stables & equestrian center.

This unique inn is located on the quiet side of North Conway and off the  beaten path, but just two miles from the village of North Conway,  guests can enjoy White Mountain  views and a picturesque rural setting. It’s a great place for couples, families,  and also business people who want  a different experience -to relax in nature but be close to all the area has to offer.

B and B with an Authentic White Mountain History: Rick can remember stories about his great-grandfather, Charlie Thompson, (1863-1947) who made a livelihood from the farm. He cared for a small herd of dairy cows; had an apple orchard, and grew vegetables. There are two  barns built in 1771-72, one is an English barn (unique to the area) and the other a Yankee barn.

From his wooded acreage, he cut and sold wood, and made syrup from his “Maple Sugar Orchard”. Also prior to electricity, Charlie supplied the neighbors with large blocks of ice for their “ice boxes” that he cut by hand from nearby Echo Lake, which is 1/2 mile and great for swimming.

Enjoy the of history of both " English" and "Yankee Barns" at the Farm by the River dated around 1771-1773

The inn guests as well as the public can enjoy 70 acres, 11 of which is of Maple Sugar forest along the Saco River while taking a horse ride. Special inn or cottage guest rates for horseback riding, carriage and sleigh rides for 2 at our award-winning stables.

The tradition continues…Charlie passed away in 1947, leaving the estate to his only daughter Edith Thompson-James. In the early 1950s Edith opened the big three-story farmhouse to tourists until about 1980. Many of the guests came back year after year and often stayed for  a month or two! Today the renovated B&B has  guest rooms  that are identified by the names of the former guests. They have kept the historic quality yet all rooms have private baths with modern amenities.

In 1983, Edith’s grandson, Rick inherited the family estate. Rick and his wife Charlene, a landscape architect and artist, decided to continue the tradition and re-opened “the Farm” as a Bed and Breakfast with Stables” in 1994 and are celebrating 20 years of exceptional service three time they were given the Trip Adviser Award of Excellence. And instead of cows, they now 20 have horses! The stables are open to the public as well as inn guests.

This country inn nestled in the White Mountains is a charming, award-wining inn with lovely decorum, with family antiques spanning several decades provides a comfortable, yet elegant ambiance.
